The National Institute for Health Specialties (NIHS) was established by a resolution of United Arab Emirates Cabinet. NIHS is responsible forestablishing a postgraduate medical education system (e.g. accreditation and certification) for specialty physicians and surgeons, and potentially other health care professionals. The NIHS aims to enhance the health sector in the country by raising the level and quality of higher medical education. Policies, regulations and accreditation requirements have been prepared with input from all major stakeholders including the health regulators, program directors and medical schools. The Institute’s work continued and specialized scientific committees were formed, the Scientific Council was formed, the accreditation system was developed and clinical assessment were arranged. These steps and achievements will lead us to the certification of the Emirati Board in the coming period, which represents an important shift in the organization and harmonization of health qualifications. We are very proud of the progress made in the Institute’s project, and to work with our partners in the country’s health sectors. We look forward to further cooperation with all for a prosperous future for health specialties and health care disciplines in the country.
